Betfair – Bookmaker Review

Betfair are the company who can claim to have changed the way British gamblers bet after introducing their betting exchange back in 2000. Some gamblers can receive up to 20% better odds this way but their sportsbook is now also one of the most popular on the market and their merger with Paddy Power doesn’t exactly harm the offering served up.

Another claim to fame for Betfair was their introduction to the market of In-Play betting and to this day nobody does it better than them. A solid opening offer for new punters can be claimed and from there many weekly bonuses, ‘best odds guaranteed’ and ‘acca insurance’ offers can be taken advantage of though new initiatives are introduced all the time.

A professional platform is offered on desktop, mobile and in app form and given that with one registration punters can move between the fixed odds sportsbook and the betting exchange, we cannot complain about the choices offered by Betfair.

Betfair – Welcome Bonus

Betfair’s current sportsbook welcome offer involves new customers placing a single fixed odds bet, £10 minimum, on any sportsbook market in order to received £30 worth of free bets.

The bet must be at odds of at least 1/5 (1.2 in decimals) and be struck within 30 days of opening the new account. Exchange bets are excluded from the promotion. Having fulfilled the criteria the £30 free bet will be valid for 30 days and must once again be used on sportsbook bets at 1/5 or bigger.

About Betfair

Andrew Black and Edward Wray are the founders of Betfair having introduced the idea of a betting exchange back in the year 2000.   This grew in popularity quite quickly and by 2006 the pair had sold 23% of their platform. Betfair purchased Timeform by the end of that year as growth continued apace and in 2009 American horse racing network TVG was brought into the family.

To compliment the exchange, a sportsbook was launched by Betfair in 2012 to compete with other large online firms such as bet365, Ladbrokes, BetVictor and the like and in September of 2015 Betfair merged with Irish bookmaker Paddy Power.

These days Paddy Power Betfair, as the larger entity is known, is one of the biggest online bookmakers in the world and their growth shows no signs of stopping just yet though in terms of branding they remain very separate.

Best Odds Guaranteed

In line with some sportsbooks and modern high street bookmakers, Betfair offers a Best Odds Guaranteed promotion on all UK & Irish horse races as well as some greyhound races. So, when you opt to take a price on a runner, it wins and it’s SP is bigger, you will be paid out at the bigger odds.

Best Odds Guaranteed is open to all customers, new and existing, and happens every single day. Always take the price in that case as if you get 6/1 for your horse and it wins at 8/1 you will be paid out at 8’s. Likewise though, should you take the 6/1 and it is backed in to 4/1 then you will be paid at 6’s.

Betting Markets offered

Horse racing markets are what Betfair was built on and they have a very strong offering on that sport today. The UK, Australia and the US are the main focuses but you can place a bet on many other territories too. Betfair remains popular for horse racing punters as they believe they can find essentially better odds than with a traditional sportsbook.

Betfair has a huge football offering as that’s where most of the money comes from these days with dozens of markets offered up on games all around the world, while both the exchange and the sportsbook offers markets on basketball, tennis, rugby and tons of other sports.

In-play Betting

Betfair are one of the key firms advertising in-play betting heavily and it’s what they rely on for custom. As one of the founders of the phenomenon on the exchanges, Betfair’s offering is hard to beat and they remain ahead of the pack.

Despite making their name as a horse racing exchange, most of the in-play business comes from football these days and that’s where you’ll find most of the markets. Asian Handicaps, BTTS, win-draw-win etc are all offered up live but the depth of these depends on the profile of the game in question.

A high profile game in La Liga or the Premier League for example will have dozens of different markets offered live meaning punters can watch the game and then join in with a bet at any point.

Streaming availability

Being at the top end of the market, Betfair couldn’t be without a quality live betting platform with a good live streaming service and on this score they don’t disappoint. The live streaming is reliable and I suppose it has to be given that they are one of the founders of promoting live betting to punters.

With cash-outs an option, live streaming gives gamblers a chance to see how a sport is panning out without relying only on game stats and the like. There is a live feed from AtTheRaces on the platform providing UK racing coverage every day and this is backed up by a very full live football schedule.

The quality and level of football matches shown on Betfair rather depends on the territory you are watching from, though basketball, tennis and other sports are shown almost constantly. The quality is high and there are no interruptions so long as your wi-fi can handle it.

Cash-out

Not only do Betfair offer a cash-out feature but they can also claim to have started the phenomenon. The idea was to protect any profit built up in your live bet or cut your losses during an event, race or game. Already the idea of waiting until a bet is fully settled bores the life out of punters and the cash-out option is used by most when the result is going their way.

The now infamous yellow cash-out button is right in your eye line on the Betfair website and completes very quickly, meaning no disasters when a team goes ahead and scores against you just as you were trying to cash your winnings out!

Betfair – Mobile App

Betfair have grown rapidly and part of their current top class reputation is having a slick, high end app and mobile site. Offers and bonuses are generally the same as on the main site though sometimes a welcome bonus purely for mobile users will be offered up.

The mobile versions of the platform are very responsive, fast and with a good user interface. The app can be downloaded onto any Android and Apple devices and gives punters full access to all available markets, cash-outs, live in-play games and of course a full bet history to ensure gamblers can keep track of their plays.

Arguably stronger apps exist for gamblers overall, such as bet365’s, but in terms of the betting exchange market there is not a better download than the Betfair app.
