Bets of the Week (6th August – 12th August)

Manchester United – Leicester City (KO 20:00 – Sky Sports 1)

It has felt like the Premier League has been away for ages. Finally it all kicks off again on Friday at Old Trafford where last season’s runners up Manchester United will host Leicester City in the opening game of the season. It has been a summer of misery for Jose Mourinho’s team with only a handful of first team starters joining the club on their pre-season tour in the US. Mourinho bemoaned the fact that it was a pointless tour and complained about the reinforcements his club had made during the summer. Unfortunately for Jose and Man Utd fans this did not improve with no further arrivals joining the team on transfer deadline day, despite being heavily linked with the likes of Leicester’s Harry Maguire, Alderweireld and Willian (and anyone else you can think of). This means that United have only improved their midfield with the Brazilian Fred and brought in a young wing back in Diego Dalot (who is out until September). There has to be cause for concern with the wing back areas lacking in quality and natural right winger missing from the team.  Leicester have been busy this window and have allowed Claude Puel to buy the players he needs, which meant necesssariling shoring up their ageing defence. However, their manager did confirm they will miss Jamie Vardy and possibly Harry Maguire with Jonny Evans, Mendy and new signing Maddison all injury doubts.

Recommended Betting Tips
1. Manchester United to win and under 2.5 goals (12/5)
2. Correct score: Manchester United 1-0 Leicester City (11/1)

Newcastle United – Tottenham Hotspur (KO 12:00 – Sky Sports 1)

It is fair to say that both clubs have had a quiet and poor transfer window, which in all honesty is to be expected in recent year. Club owners Mike Ashley (Newcastle) and Daniel Levy (Spurs) are notorious ‘penny pinchers’ and prefer to not splash the cash. At least Newcastle have brought in several ‘unknown’ players and two players with Premier League experience in Salomon Rondon (West Brom) and Federico Fernandez (Swansea). Spurs fans and manager Mauricio Pochettino will not be happy that they are the only club in the league to not have added new players to their squad. If this is meant to be a Spurs side that are challenging for the title it is questionable that this squad will be able to do it against improved City and Liverpool teams.

Successful World Cup’s for many of the Tottenham players: Hugo Lloris,Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele, Dele Alli, and Harry Kane means that that these will most likely not start in their Premier Leageu opener. With the majority of their squad being unavailable Newcastle might fancy themselves, there is nothing to lose in the first game of the season and with the Geordie crowd behind them they might be able to sneak a win. Benitez is a tactically astute manager and has a decent record against the top six sides at home so Draw No Bet looks a value bet at 13/8 look a value gamble. Our correct score prediction is a 1-1 draw which is available at 6/1 with Bet365.

Recommended Betting Tips

1. Draw no bet Newcastle (13/8)

2. Correct score: Newcastle 1 – 1 Tottenham (6/1)

Arsenal FC – Manchester City (KO 16:00 – Sky Sports)

What a tasty game for the first weekend of the Premier league, a clash between last year champions Manchester City and the ‘new’ Arsenal with Unai Emery replacing Arsene Wenger in the summer. It is no surprise that City begin their defence of the league under Guardiola that they are the odds on favourites to retain their title of champions. As mentioned in our premier league betting preview, this City side broke all kinds of records last season with the most points, wins and goals in a Premier League season. Guardiola is building a machine and they could potentially do even better this year, already adding the Community Shield to their trophy cabinet last weekend. Nobody really knows what to expect from this new look Arsenal side under an experienced manager in the Spaniard Unai Emery. He will be looking to show his vision for their style in their opening game and it will be interesting to see how they counter City’s attacking football. They have a plethora of exciting and talented forwards in Mkhitaryan, Ozil, Aubameyang and Lacazette, if they can jell this could be an exciting season for the Gunners.

Pep Guardiola has not been loud in the transfer window but did secure the signing of the experienced Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City. The winger will be a nice addition to the City squad which is already talent packed. It is likely that Kevin De Bruyne, Sterling and Silva will be missing from Sunday’s clash but they have the strength in depth to replace them with rhw likes of Bernardo Silva and Sane. Games between City and Arsenal tend to involve goals so our first recommended bet is ‘Both Teams To Score’ 8/15. Aguero has also started the season in blistering form and we fancy him to score a goal or two – 5/1 with NetBet.

Recommended Betting Tips

1 Both Teams To Score (8/15)

2. Aguero – 2 or more goals (5/1)
