UFC 228 Betting Tips

This week we will be breaking UFC 228’s main event in our weekly betting blog. England’s own Darren Till (Liverpool) will be squaring up to face reigning Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. The main event promises to be one of the best title fights UFC fans will see all year (after Khabib vs McGregor in October) and with a changing of the guard across the weight classes, it might be Till’s chance to shine and claim the welterweight title at only 26 years old.
The Scouser has made a real name for himself in the last 12 months with his performances backing up his confident and brash talk. It says enough that the UFC brought a PPV event to his hometown, Liverpool, in which he fought the at the time #2 welterweight contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. Four months later and he’s now fighting for the belt on Saturday in Dallas, Texas against a supremely confident Tyron Woodley.

How do they square up?

UFC 228

Overview Tyron Woodley vs Darren Till

This clash is a mouthwatering prospect of the young lion against the reigning champion. Darren Till is an incredibly skilled striker which he proved in his chess match against Wonderboy in May. Tyron Woodley has had some amazing knockout performances since joining the UFC, with his most notable KO against Robbie Lawler for the title. However, Woodley has been criticised in his last two title defences for being too cautious and fighting to just keep the belt. This is something that has annoyed pundits and UFC fans with Woodley not being one of the most popular fighters in the business despite this being his 4th title defence.
Both fighters have an incredible fight IQ with Woodley being able to adjust his game plan for every opponent he has faced in his title defences so far. Darren Till has shown to be years ahead of his age in his fighting, started Muay Thai at the age of 13, and it is scary prospect to think that he is still two years away from his prime. The young Liverpudlian not only wants to be recognised as the Champion, he wants to be recognised by everyone as the best fighter and striker in the UFC. A lot was made of the size difference between the two when they squared up at the press conference in LA. Woodley is used to fighting bigger opponents and this won’t make much of a difference as his wrestling skills are better suited to taller fighters. What does make it interesting is the weight Till will carry on fight night. If he has a good weight cut this time around, he will be in prime condition and will come in much heavier than the champ for their battle. This could wear down Woodley if he decides to try to and wrestle Till.

Keys to victory

Woodley has fought opponents with similar traits to Darren Till (Carlos Condit and Wonderboy), Darren Till hasn’t fought anyone with the skills of Woodley (wrestling, submissions and a power right hand). Woodley needs to command respect of the octagon and use his skill set to put Till on the back foot from the start, if he doesn’t then he risks Darren Till taking him apart with his superior striking skills. Woodley has fought counter strikers and a Ji-Jutsi specialist (Damian Maia) and found ways to shut them down albeit in controversial and “boring” way. Woodley fights in bursts relying on his big right hand and since the joining the UFC he only has 5 takedowns, despite winning by submissions in his earlier Strikeforce days. He is an amazing athlete and one of the best in MMA with his ruthless explosiveness. Power and speed are his key attributes, his rush forward often puts opponents on the back foot and leaves them vulnerable to the right hand.
Darren Till needs to remain calm and confident as he has been in every fight in the UFC so far. He command the space of the octagon and his energy and confidence makes other fighters doubt themselves like we have seen in the Cowboy Cerrone fight. A very aggressive Muay Thai fighter with a strong mindset who carries himself in an imposing way. He likes to play with his opponents and doesn’t rush his shots or look for the KO; this is his way of showing he is superior skilled than his opponent by out striking them. However, he will need to make sure he doesn’t stand still in front of Woodley because of the risk of his right hand, Till will need to keep moving and make Woodley work (Till moves well in all his fights and rarely gets caught clean). Targeting the body and shoulder with kicks could be a gameplan as Woodley has a weak shoulder after requiring several operations after the Maia fight. By taking power out of the right arm of Woodley it will heavily limit the champ’s striking. For Till to claim the belt he will need to win this fight by outclassing him or KO/TKO, as a stalemate will always favour the champ.

Betting Tips

1. Darren Till win (10/11)
