Sun Bets – Bookmaker Review

Despite its teething troubles, being one of the newest betting firms on the market, Sun Bets at least has the backing of some big names in the industry and instantly had a recognisable logo being that it belongs to popular British newspaper The Sun.

Given this fact Sun Bets is likely to grow significantly over the next few years but for now new customers shouldn’t expect an all singing, all dancing platform as there are lots of gaps and lots of areas of potential still to cover.

Our review looks at the overall brand, its welcome bonus for new customers, Sun Bets’ live in-play offering and promotions as well as what sort of mobile and app it can offer for punters on the move.

  • Strong brand name (The Sun) despite being a new start
  • Site and App easy to navigate
  • Uncluttered market and bet layout
  • Fair odds on major markets

  • No e-wallet payments accepted
  • Bad reputation inherited from The Sun newspaper
  • Fairly poor App offered

So, Sun Bets has to balance up its big reputation with a whole generation of tabloid buyers with whom it can build a foundation and a new generation of punters who don’t buy such publications and have been used to the awkward reputation the brand has, especially surrounding certain football matters.

Sun Bets – Welcome Bonus

Sun Bets’ welcome bonus is based heavily on the popular offer supplied by Betfair, i.e. bet £5 and get £10 in free bets. New punters simply need to register their account before placing a minimum £5 bet and after doing so they will receive a £10 bet for free. The £10 free bet appear in your account within 48 hours and any qualifying bets must be placed at odds of 1/5 or bigger. Free bets expire after 30 days if they remain unused.

Sun Bets is the latest firm to attempt to break into the online betting industry in the UK and was launched as recently as summer 2016. As the name suggests, Sun Bets was launched by the country’s number one selling tabloid, The Sun, but this fact alone makes it one some customers want to avoid.

The paper was embroiled in various controversies; not least their outrageous criticism of Liverpool FC fans over the Hillsborough disaster which has led to swathes of people from that part of the country boycotting the publication.

Headlines regarding various political issues have split the country on numerous occasions and this iconic logo could therefore be a dream and a nightmare for the brand. The strong brand name that comes with its association with The Sun though may be a positive point for some and that sort of backing is indeed rare with such a new start-up.

In terms of the UK market at least, Sun Bets has been formed in the right place given that very few foreign firms break into the market with much success. This is because the UK itself has essentially been the home of betting shops over the decades and since then has been the home of the best new online betting firms, such as bet365 and the game changing Betfair.

Naturally Sun Bets is in its infancy but it will be interesting to see what sort of market share they can generate over the next five years or so. For now though it remains very small.

Best Odds Guaranteed

Sun Bets offer various basic promotions on the most popular sports, the now familiar Best Odds Guaranteed on UK and Irish horse racing being one of them. Best odds guaranteed is offered from 9AM every morning on these races and means that if you place a bet at this time on a horse at 7/1 and it wins at 9/1, you bet paid out at the bigger price.

Conversely, should you take that 7/1 bet and your horse wins at 5/1 then you still get paid out at 7/1. This is a permanent offer and is open to all customers, new and existing alike. All customers backing horses after 9AM on race day should routinely click to take the odds.

Betting Markets offered

Sun Bets’ selection of sports and betting markets is not in question with plenty to keep even regular football and horse racing punters in particular occupied. The firm have highly competitive prices in most markets and this is no coincidence as it’s their main focus for now until they can grow their customer base.

Offering plenty of markets on football, darts, racing, cricket, rugby, boxing and other sports, Sun Bets will fairly often beat competitors on price and although offering the best price is a simple thing to get right, it’s very often the only thing punters are concerned with and is a thing a lot of big firms get wrong.

In-play Betting

Technology wise Sun Bets are lacking a little something for now, but in terms of knowing what punters want they are in a very good position in coming from The Sun newspaper who have for years published gambling related material and run a successful Fantasy Football competition.

Their in-play service then is something they’ve concentrated on from the start and this one’s ease of use is something which definitely goes in the plus column. Price boosts are often offered on in-play events and the only thing missing is a quality live streaming service to go along with it.

Streaming availability

Given Sun Bets’ lack of features and how new the firm is, it is perhaps no surprise that there is currently no live streaming offered on any of the platforms. Hopefully this is something that will come soon as given the escalating cost of satellite television and the fact that modern punters like to see a sport played out before making an informed betting decision, live streaming is becoming more and more essential to the common gambler.

Streaming is hopefully something Sun Bets will add as their platforms continue to grow but the cost of licensing and such is very prohibitive for new start-ups so we may be waiting a while just yet.

Sun Bets could do with more betting features and over the course of time I’m sure they’ll add plenty to their platforms, but at least they do have a cash-out feature online and on the mobile apps allowing people to keep control of their betting.

On the app, simply click ‘in-play’ to see which live bets you have running and below you will see your stake, original odds and ‘potential collect’ all listed in an easy to read format. Underneath this in a large green banner will be your current cash-out amount. If you think it may be worth taking the amount offered, simply click on the banner and the funds will go into your account immediately.

Mobile App

A Sun Bets mobile web page and app do exist but given the age of the firm it’s hardly surprising that the offering is not the best, nor is it heavily promoted on the company’s main site. There are links on the website for the app, available on all Android and iOS devices and it is simple to download and use though doesn’t get the best feedback from end users just now.

The user interface on the mobile site and app is very good though and is preferred by most punters to the main site itself, though it certainly needs improvement as the months go on and Sun Bets look to increase their market share.

A better mobile/app and the integration of live streaming onto it would transform Sun Bets’ offering overnight for sure.

  • Easy to download
  • Easy to use and navigate
  • Preferable to the main page

  • Rather light on features
  • Too many security questions needed to access new account
  • Slow reaction upon clicking links

What Payment Methods are available?

Given that Sun Bets is new to the betting game they have a dearth of payment methods available on the platform but do accept all major credit and debit cards via Visa or MasterCard. Those who prefer PayPal, Ukash, Skrill, Neteller or the PaySafe card will be left disappointed but we would imagine that alternative payment options will be made available in good time.

To the chagrin of most punters, Sun Bets’ lack of payment options also goes hand-in-hand with the age old issue of them accepting your deposits instantly but taking up to five banking days to pay out after a withdrawal is requested.

That is the official line at least, though some customers have reported being paid out into their banks within a single business day which, if it becomes common practice, would be a major plus point.
